What Are the Major Aging Changes that Affect Independence?
This chapter outlines the changes that often occur with normal aging and conditions the oldest‐old frequently experience. Designing an environment for a physically and/or mentally impaired person requires some knowledge of the changes that occur in people as they age. Part of normal aging is the experience of losing sensory acuity, which can put older people at risk. Vision loss begins to be noticeable after age 40. The onset of hearing loss can be gradual and take 25‐30 years to become noticeable. Losing your sense of taste can start in the mid‐50s but accelerates during the 60s. Sense of smell diminishes gradually after age 60. The sense of touch is the first sense to develop and the last to go. Disability is an important consideration because it differentiates the self‐reliant oldest‐old from those who are struggling to maintain their independence. Disability results from three factors: disease, lifestyle, and normal aging changes.
