Study of Three‐Phase Water Treatment for Kansas City, Missouri
This article discusses a cooperative study conducted at the water treatment facility in Kansas City, Missouri, on the feasibility of developing a supplementary groundwater supply; the advantages and savings associated with the use of groundwater; and, the feasibility of pretreatment of raw water by chemicals prior to entering the presedimentation basin. The results of the study indicated that significant improvements could be made in the treatment process with the use of oxidants and well water blending in the stage before softening. The study found that a third stage in the treatment process is necessary in order to produce a high quality product of unquestionable safety. This stage, in addition to facilities for the application of coagulants and activated carbon, should provide for continuous chlorination of the raw water, intermittent application of potassium permanganate and intermittent blending of well water with river water.
