Interchange Environmental Landscape Design
The main objectives of landscape design for the motorway interchange area are: (i) guide drivers' sight; (ii) protect the slope and consolidate the soil; and (iii) plant vegetation and improve the motorway environment. Landscape design shall be based on comprehensive analysis on local physical geographical characteristics, economic and social development, customs and habits, historical and cultural heritage, terrain features within the area, buildings and functions of transportation, for creating green landscapes with unique ecological and cultural features. This chapter highlights the three categories of interchange landscape designs: (i) rural category; (ii) suburb category; (iii) atypical category. In order to create the landscapes mentioned above, the natural topography must be reconditioned. The design features of the interchanges on the Nanjing‐Hangzhou Motorway are detailed in this chapter. On this motorway, attention has been paid to people‐oriented design and natural ecology, thus avoiding damage to the natural environment.
