Well and Borehole Testing
This chapter deals with tests that are carried out in single wells or boreholes to obtain values of aquifer parameters. A pumping test involves a considerable investment in equipment, time, non‐productive water abstraction and power. Prior to commencing a pumping test on any well intended to become a significant permanent abstraction, the hydrogeologist or engineer should carry out a ‘water features survey’ of the area likely to be affected by the new abstraction. The best time to carry out a pumping test will depend on climate, practical considerations and the urgency with which the source needs to be commissioned. In some aquifer systems, ‘poroelasticity’ and ‘subsidence’ of the aquifer and aquitard material can lead to unusual pumping test responses, including the so‐called ‘Noordbergum effect’. For most pumping tests, well storage is considered negligible, but this is not the case with large diameter wells in a low transmissivity aquifer.
