Suggested Method for Calibration of Briggs Microelectrophoresis Cells
The application of microelectrophoresis for the determination of particle mobility requires that compensation be made for the phenomenon of electroendosmosis (or electroosmosis) that occurs in the cell. A liquid in contact with a surface such as glass may possess a potential with respect to the latter. If an electric field is applied to such a system, there will be movement of the liquid along the surface as a result of this potential. This streaming (electroosmosis) must be taken into consideration if the true electrophoretic velocity is to be measured. This article recommends that the complete velocity profile be substituted for the blood sample as a method for the calibration of the Briggs microelectrophoresis cells.
