Describes Persian qanats, water infrastructure of Pompei, Byzantium, the Mayans, the Incas, ancient China, medieval and early modern Europe, origins of the germ theory, the Great Stink and the beginnings of modern sewage treatment and potable water supply. Describes Birmingham's water supply system and the California water wars of the 1920s.
