Ground‐Motion Selection and Modification
The goal of nonlinear response history analysis is to estimate seismic demands that may be imposed by unknown ground shaking at the site caused by future earthquakes. Because the ground motion (GM) cannot be defined uniquely, people are interested in the statistics of structural response to an ensemble of GMs. The subject of GM selection and modification (GMSM) has been a popular research topic since the early 2000s. However, much of the work has been restricted to a single horizontal component of GM. Within this restriction, the chapter presents the amplitude‐scaling method and the spectral‐matching method. Thereafter, these GMSM procedures are extended to two horizontal components of GM and subsequently to include the vertical component of GM. These extensions are included in the chapter because all three components of GM should generally be considered in nonlinear response history analysis of concrete dams, especially if the models are three‐dimensional, as in the case of arch dams.
