The Room Fire
As diagnostic fire is so important to fire defense analyses and risk characterizations, this chapter reviews a few important concepts and definitions. The chapter first describes important definitions for a systematic building analysis and room fire behavior. It then discusses some useful experimental and theoretical relationships that influence room fire development. There are three mechanisms that transfer heat from hotter to colder locations: conduction, convection and radiation. Although many factors can influence room fire development, the heat release rate (HRR) is the most significant property in describing a fire. The transfer of heat influences the speed and certainty of growing fires and fire propagation. Heat transfer conditions influence the complete range of fire behavior. Flashover is a significant event in room fires. When the volatile gases of the fuels in the room reach their ignition temperature, and enough oxygen is present, the fire spreads very rapidly. This phenomenon is called “flashover”.
