Architectural Sites
This chapter describes how natural sedimentary processes and anthropogenic sediments can be combined to lead us to interpretations about how architectural sites form. A review of the main natural processes acting within the realm of these types of sites is presented together with criteria for differentiating them from some anthropogenic activities that produce seemingly similar deposits. An attempt has also been made to put some order into the immense variability of anthropogenic sediments in urban archaeological sites by grouping together the types of sedimentary fabrics and structures that most important anthropogenic activities produce in these sites. These include roofed and unroofed facies, destruction and abandonment facies, streets, courtyards, gardens as well as special earthen constructions (house pits, mounds, tombs, etc.).
