Urban Conservation as International Public Policy
The emergence and expansion of urban conservation are examined in Chapter 2, through an analysis of the process of development of the main international Conventions, Charters and Organisations for heritage conservation in the post‐war period, a process that has allowed the establishment of internationally recognised principles and practices of great significance for the contemporary world.
The contradictions of urban conservation and the need to integrate it into a broader urban development framework are at the origin of several attempts to update and revise the international conservation principles, both through regional charters and through the discussion initiated by UNESCO on the concept of Historic Urban Landscape. This process of revision concerns several aspects of the conservation paradigm that need to be examined by the international conservation community.
