A built form is created in response to an existing set of conditions, in a given environment, under the prevailing climate and socio‐economic context. From the outset, the functional requirements determine the building ‘programme’ such that the arrangement and ordering of forms best ‘afford’ and promote the varying use functions and activities anticipated. For the design of any built facility, the essential outcome is an elegant workable solution as to how the functional requirements or ‘brief’ for the building can be attained. All built forms are determined by their structural system, which necessarily has to withstand gravity and wind forces and provide resistance for given load paths. Horizontal spans can be increased and column supports reduced, enabling freer space to be attained or different spaces to be created using non‐load bearing elements.
