The practicalities of building with sustainable technologies
Chapter 8 describes and discusses the practicalities related to installing and using sustainable technologies rather than the design‐related explanations and comparisons detailed in Chapter 3. Methods that can be used by a client or contractor to select appropriate sustainable technologies for a particular project from the plethora that exist are described. The text introduces a series of renewable generation systems from solar to wind generation. Other forms of energy‐related sustainable technologies are discussed, including heat pumps, combined heat and power, and biomass units. The control of these new variable power sources is investigated alongside the need for alleviating overheating through ventilation, smart systems, and energy efficiency through appropriate use of such technologies. The use of collected rainwater and reuse of greywater is also discussed.
