Coastal Flood Defences – Strategies for Protection in the United Kingdom
Today, many coastal centres of commerce face the concern of an increasing threat of flooding from rising sea levels and the coincidence of storms and surges. This chapter focuses on forms of coastal flood defence and approaches in the United Kingdom (UK). The UK‐government‐arranged Foresight Project provides more information on future flood and coastal defences in the UK, and uses theories to assess the possible scale and nature of future risks of coastal erosion, and assess options for responding to those risks. The chapter discusses the strategy of managed retreat, and the challenges arising from climate change and sea‐level rise, changing populations, land management and development. All aspects of flood risk management should be carried out in a proportionate way that reflects the size and complexity of the risk and society's ability to manage it. Investment in managing risk, and who pays for it, should reflect the benefits that result.
