Roman temples in southern Syria
This chapter indicates the significance in understanding archaeology and societies. It aims to explore through the study of temples in the Hauran how and if people, in the Roman period, perceived connectivity. The chapter examines architectural features of the temples, and temple inscriptions mentioning the worship of Zeus, Athena and Tyche. It focuses on the appearance of new architectural elements and the use of Greek names of deities together the Greek script in the Hauran from the first century to the third century CE. By drawing from a sample of temples’ architectural elements and deities worshipped in cult centers, the chapter suggests that temple's benefactors were most likely aware that they employed architectural elements widely used outside their region and worshipped deities with Greek names. It offers a small first window of the awareness of ancient connectivity related to Roman religious architecture in the Near East.
