La Défense Seine Arche
The construction of the Grande Arche de La Défense by the Danish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen not only marked the successful termination of the district's first phase, but also, through its ingenious opening, raised the question of the axis's continuation to the west. As one of the most extreme examples of podium urbanism, a concrete construction 1.5 kilometres in length separates a multitude of heavy infrastructures and parking levels in its centre from an artificial and pedestrianised surface on its top which gives access to a set of predominantly high‐rise structures. The site's impressive size and its long development time span make it difficult to identify any clearly repetitive architectural typology. Still following international trends, a whole set of towers and mid‐rise buildings of the 1980s and early 1990s, including Tour Elf, featured mirrored glass and established an ambivalent relation between the pedestrians, the buildings and the sky.
