Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
The Industrial Revolution accelerated population growth and spurred migration from country to town. Improvements to transportation beginning with canals and then railways changed the appearance of cities and encouraged commuters and the development of suburbs. Unprecedented population growth led to legislation to regulate buildings, streets and industry. Poverty, pollution encouraged the creation of parks and epidemics and the discovery of the germ theory of disease brought about comprehensive schemes for sewerage and other infrastructure. The Oil Age and development of motor vehicles in the twentieth century brought further changes, with new settlements interconnected and dominated by highways. Suburbs grew and inner cities declined. Problems of burgeoning modern cities were addressed through town planning, zoning and the establishment of garden cities and green belts.
