Hydraulic heave failure, ground failure
This chapter discusses safety against hydraulic heave failure and piping (ground failure due to internal erosion). In homogenous soil, all potential hydraulic heave failure planes start at the base of the structure. In a hydraulic heave failure, a body of earth in front of a structure is subjected to uplift force due to groundwater flow. This effect reduces the passive earth pressure. The danger of an impending hydraulic heave failure in an excavation may be indicated by wetting of the base near the sides of the excavation; the ground then seems soft and springy. There is a risk of piping if the soil at the bottom of a watercourse or base of an excavation can be washed out through seepage. Swelling of the ground and the ejection of soil particles on the lower water side or in the base of the excavation is the first indication of a piping failure.
