The Use of Aerial Photographs for Conservation and Research
Aerial photographs illustrate extensive designed landscapes including parks associated with grand houses, urban parks, and the settings of hospitals, housing estates and military complexes. The aerial view shows the general layout of parks and gardens, records earthworks, and reveal buried features visible as cropmarks. Historic aerial photographs, taken since the early twentieth century, record the decline in country house estates and municipal parks but also record the development of new designed landscapes such as the university campus. Interpretation and mapping from aerial photographs, and new technology such as lidar, provide a framework for research and conservation of these sites and landscapes.
