Handling of Phosphates at Torresdale Treatment Plant
The Torresdale Treatment Plant in Philadelphia, a modern rapid sand filter plant, has a maximum capacity of 423 mgd, which is more than adequate for the demand of 160‐170 mil gal called for on a typical day. This paper discusses the use of a phosphate bulk‐handling method at Torresdale that uses large aluminum bins for basic handling operations such as shipping, storage, and discharge, and hold about 2 tons of pelleted metaphosphates each. Compared to the old plastic‐lined multiwall bags previously used, that each held only 100 lbs. of phosphates, there is quite a big cost‐ savings. The paper discusses other cost‐savings aspects of this improved method of handling phosphates at the Torresdale Treatment Plant.
