Double Cemented Carbide ‐ Microstructural Model of Toughness
Double cemented (DC) carbide is a novel particle reinforced metal matrix composite with an excellent combination of fracture toughness and abrasive wear resistance. The microstructure of this material is that of a “composite‐within‐a‐composite,' with cemented carbide granules (WC+Co) dispersed within a metal matrix. This structure provides many degrees of freedom for designing combinations of properties not possible with conventional particle reinforced composites. This chapter describes a microstructure based model of the fracture toughness of these materials and experimental tests of the model.
