Effects of Nuclear Explosions on Watersheds
This article presents a study on the effects of nuclear detonations, accidental or intentional, which could bring about vast changes in the characteristics and functioning of any nearby watershed. Of primary importance in determining the blast damage sustained by the watershed are the nature and density of the vegetative cover, the topography of the region, the size of the weapon, the height of the burst, and the distance from ground zero. Topics discussed include: degrees of damage; explosion characteristics; meteorologic conditions; firestorm; types of forest fires; aftermaths; damage studies; determination of erosion; problems of regrowth; and, economic loss.
