Randomness and Reliability
The preceding chapters have taken a deterministic point of view. But the reality more or less is random. The deterministic view might be considered as representative but this misses an appropriate characterization of randomness. Thus, this chapter summarizes basics of uncertainty and randomness and the concept of operational failure probability. Usual normal two‐parameter models are generalized for multiple dimensions and non‐normal distributions. Furthermore, failure probability is connected to the concept of partial safety factors, which are common in the design practice for building structures. Partial safety factor derivation is described regarding a reliability level target and stochastic properties of parameters.
