16.21: Evaluation of existing railway bridges
Bridges under exploitation were built gradually in different time periods and designed according to time‐knowledge and loading actions reflecting the level of transport technique. Thus, the live‐load‐carrying capacity of an existing structure should produce the evidence that it will function safely over a specified residual service life. Usually the bridges were also designed by safe life method and a limited serviceability was considered. Such structure requires to be replaced once this designed durability would be achieved. Alternatively, the damage tolerant technique should provide an acceptable reliability that a structure will perform reasonably for its service. The present practice is illustrated in the paper by case studies on existing railway bridges under exploitation. Procedures for service‐load‐level analyses are given to estimate the residual service life
