Crack Deflection at Structured Interlayers
Large scale structured interfaces, consisting of a single crack bridged by ligaments, can be used to deflect cracks in a single phase material. An interface containing 1 mm diameter bridging ligaments with a bridged area fraction of 0.1 deflects a primary crack during a 4‐point bend test in PMMA. This type of interface offers advantages over graphitic interlayers if it is used in ceramic laminates. A low area fraction of bridging ligaments promotes crack deflection at structured interfaces.
