Building Integrated Innovations and Methods (Case Studies)
This chapter offers several specific case studies that discuss how design and technical innovations are used in an integrated way to improve building performance, collaboration between project stakeholders and engineering design outcomes. Designers must be cognizant of different properties and characteristics, and the appropriate applications of assorted advanced technologies and architectural innovations, to successfully integrate best practices. The center is a research and design development laboratory, operating under the umbrella of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, with the purpose of engaging in interdisciplinary research on sustainable design strategies, material innovation and building efficiency. A building energy management system tracks energy use, displays real‐time energy consumption data to building occupants and monitors energy production from renewable energy systems. Renewable energy systems include a rooftop photovoltaic array and on‐site wind turbine with horizontal axis. The building plan is octagonal and includes a large three‐storey arena that forms the center piece of the building. The building consists of three underground and four above‐ground levels, and the program includes event space, conference and seminar rooms, exhibition space, and a restaurant.
