Conservation Is Not an Option
From where I sit, water conservation is not a theoretical concept. California is still in the grips of a mega‐drought, and conservation is now mandated in my state. I look out on my brown lawn and mourn the loss of an old, beautiful rose bush that could not hack the watering cutback of 50% in my household. Yes, I understand that a drought‐tolerant landscape is far better than turf, but no one mentions the cost of the conversion or the need for extra watering to get a Xeriscape garden to take hold. In any case, turf replacement is scheduled for next year. As I write this, the El Nino rains are just a forecast. By the time this column is published, I hope the forecast turns into a vastly improved water supply for the state and the southwestern United States.
