For indicators as to how high‐speed development responds to massive growth in population, all eyes look to China. Tim Jachna describes how the Chinese government intends to learn from the technological teething troubles of the West, and bypass them altogether by investing heavily in a digitally networked urban culture. This means drawing a much closer link between rural and urban populations until they blend into one. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
