Exhibition Practice in the Nineteenth Century
This chapter surveys exhibition practice in the nineteenth century and provides a context for evaluating individual artists’ careers and the progress of art movements. Areas covered include: international and government‐sponsored exhibitions, artists’ exhibitions both group and solo, gallery and museum exhibitions. Of escalating significance were artists’ solo exhibitions, the most famous of which were David's show of 1799 and Courbet's of 1855. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, artists’ union exhibitions became important, sometimes organized by the artists themselves, sometimes by private societies of collectors. The number of art galleries mushroomed in the second half of the nineteenth century, with art dealers assuming the functions of all other types of exhibitions.
