In the current chapter, the FEM method is introduced with enough details for non‐familiar readers to be able to grasp the different modeling techniques introduced in subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 should not be viewed as a comprehensive coverage of the FEM method, but rather as a “just enough” coverage for the manuscript to be complete and for readers to be able to go through it, without the need for further readings. It covers topics such as linear and nonlinear, steady‐state and transient FEM analyses and also multi‐physical problems and stabilized formulations. Obviously, a full coverage of the FEM method would require several handbooks and it is beyond the scope of the current book. Readers who are interested in getting a deeper understanding of FEM and its mathematical foundations may refer to the wide variety of available handbooks on the topic.
