Water‐Supply Reservoirs: How Much Storage Space Remains?
Loss of reservoir‐storage capacity because of Sediment deposition is a long‐term widely recognized problem. Nationally, as many as 1 million acre‐ft of reservoir capacity may be lost to Sediment deposition each year. In spite of this potential problem, a survey of major water Utilities reveals that few Utilities have data available to describe losses in reservoir capacity. Even though land use is shown to have a significant factor bearing on Sedimentation rates, less than half the Utilities reported current knowledge of land use. This article discusses typical Sedimentation problems and factors affecting reservoir Sedimentation rates and recommends an Action Now program to help in obtaining needed data.
