Determination of 2,4‐Dichlorophenol in Water
Ester derivatives of 2, 4‐dichlorophenoxy acetic acid are highly effective aquatic herbicides. Water supply management has indicated some concern, however, about the occurrence in water supplies of 2, 4‐dichlorophenol from commercial formulations or from biologic degradation of 2, 4‐D. In investigating the effect of 2, 4‐D formulations on water quality, it was found that the 4‐aminoantipyrine colorimetric method for the determination of phenolic compounds (Standard Methods) would not detect 2, 4‐ dichlorophenol. Subsequent research revealed that the pH value of the colorimetric reaction was responsible for the failure. The standard method was modified to eliminate the distillation screening procedure. An acid extraction of the water sample with petroleum ether removes the 2, 4‐dichlorophenol from organic and inorganic interferences in the aqueous phase.
