In this chapter, the author shares the discussion he had in an interview with Michelle Kaufmann, an architect with a passion for forward‐looking sustainable design that leverages digital technology, prefabrication, and systems thinking. Before joining Google in 2015 as the Director of R&D for the Built Environment, Michelle worked for four years at X, the research subsidiary of Alphabet and sister company of Google. In the interview, Michelle describes how her team invests in research intended to accelerate and scale design and construction innovation beyond Google itself; her collaborations with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Heatherwick Studio, and Alphabet CEO Larry Page; and why Astro Teller, the “Captain of Moonshots” at X, is such an inspirational and influential leader.
