Bringing the Past In: Narrative Inquiry and the Preservation of Historic Interiors
This chapter proposes narrative research as a vehicle for capturing critical tension points in the development of historic interiors. The first section of the chapter explores narrative research, its application in multiple fields, and the insight it provides into historical events and places. The second section outlines the author's methodological approach, which is an amalgam of case‐study methodology and narrative inquiry. The third section contains an in‐depth analysis of a single critical juncture in the preservation of the Hull House Settlement to illustrate an application of narrative inquiry. Exploration of this juncture involves the presentation of a series of stakeholder narratives which illustrate different viewpoints about the significance of this site at a particular time in its history. The intent is to demonstrate how the Hull House Settlement and its preservation project traverse varied, intersecting narratives, and to provide a richer interpretation of the interior environment at this historic site.
