Accelerated Microbiological Testing in Membrane Water Treatment Systems
The water that St. John Parish in southeast Louisiana treats and supplies originates from a groundwater well that produces water of high organic content and color. In the past, the organics were oxidized and broken down by chlorination, but utilities are moving away from this practice because of the production of disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes and haloacidic acids. The utility has therefore sought to remove the need for chlorination from the injection point near the well and treat the raw water completely via cartridge prefilters followed by a bank of membranes in the treatment plant.
