Art in Roman Town Houses
Roman houses appear to have bedrooms, and dining rooms. On the other hand, Romans had no “offices,” and Roman houses were also places of work. This chapter covers both art in houses, decor and furniture, and art of houses, their overall design. Roman houses included a wide range of functions: “office,” shop, formal audience, and clubhouse. The House of Marcus Lucretius Fronto represents a wealthier Pompeian on the eve of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. This is compared with a third‐century CE house from North Africa; again a house of someone with some status, but not one of the richest in the city. The House of the Bound Animals is a “modest” house in a provincial setting. It represents one of the smaller houses of Roman North Africa at the height of its prosperity in the third century CE, when African emperors ruled the Empire.
