Constitutive Equations at High Strain Rates
This chapter illustrates the constitutive relations of materials, taking the strain rate effect into account. Decreasing the temperature and increasing the strain rate have a similar effect to increasing the yield stress and reducing the ductility of the material. The chapter explores a number of equations that have been proposed and successfully used to describe the plastic behavior of materials as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature. In addition to the effects of large plastic strains, high strain rates, and softening due to adiabatic heating, the damage softening is another important effect in the problem of ballistic impacts on ductile materials. The chapter discusses the deformation mechanism of metal plasticity at the micro‐scale that is the motion of dislocations varying with the strain rate and temperature at the macro‐scale.
