This chapter positions scripting as a fundamental tool with which to explore dimensionality in architecture: spatially, and as a series of levels that have mathematical and philosophical implications. It talks about definitions of ‘dimension’, which ranges between a measure, spatial extents such as ‘thickness’, mathematical, geometrical and algebraic properties, and the descriptive part of a compound noun such as ‘dimension line’. The chapter then looks at the computational logic behind the geometry of Antoni Gaud's columns at the Sagrada Famlia church in Barcelona. It also talks about parametric design software for vehicle design, which the author deployed in a hybrid relationship with scripting overlays. The chapter signals key moments along the author's journey where greater architectural potential has been discovered, realised, or invoked through scripting with a ‘time or displacement dimension’. The story of the middle phase of ‘scripted sketching’ is also explained.
