National Engineers Week Designed to Avoid Future Shortage of Engineers
This article describes a new nationwide program for the 2002 National Engineer's Week (February 17‐23) in which volunteer engineers would work with children who range in age from 6 to 11 years old to introduce them to the fun and fascinating side of engineering. Designed in conjunction with the children's television show “ZOOM” aired by the Public Broadcasting Service, the program will coordinate with three episodes of the show and will help teach engineers how to use a hands‐on activity kit that is intended to intrigue children. The goal of this and the other programs of National Engineers Week is to steer young people into math and science classes early enough so that they have the educational backgrounds appropriate for entering college engineering programs, which would help combat the shortage of engineers that is expected in future years.
