Energy, water, refurbishment, and sustainable building design
Chapter 3 focuses on the major design‐related features that affect the sustainability of the constructed building. This includes the predesign considerations, the choice of building fabric, sustainable technologies, the energy and water used within the fabric and by the occupants of a building, and the design‐related aspects of sustainable refurbishment. These topics are raised again in Chapter 5 from a construction‐related approach rather than through the concerns of a designer. Sustainable technologies, such as micro generation, pose different challenges to the designer (spacial, cost, client‐related aspirations) compared to the constructor who faces related issues such as integration with the existing building services, appropriate siting of peripheral infrastructure, storage, and handling. Other aspects of sustainable design, such as the specification and use of materials, are described in Chapter 4. Design philosophies, wider planning issues, and global emission pressures are touched upon where necessary but are not the major focus of this chapter. The reader is guided toward other relevant texts that take up these topics in greater detail than can be tackled here.
