Inscribing Construction
The Financing and Administration of Public Building in Greek Sanctuaries
This chapter discusses the inscribing construction for the financing and administration of public building in Greek sanctuaries. The modern visitor to the New Acropolis Museum in Athens can share with their ancient counterparts the experience of viewing the sculptures and architectural members from the Periclean program in close proximity to the inscribed marble stelai that tell the story of their design and construction. The epigraphic category of “building inscriptions” covers a variety of monumentalized texts from ancient construction projects and includes: decrees setting up committees of officials and architects to administer projects; and legal prosecutions for defaulting or fraudulent builders. The publication of building contracts in such a fashion was laborious and very expensive, and the expenditure of so much time and money on inscribing something somewhat unnecessary, if the sole purpose of the inscriptions was to allow the various interested parties to examine the documents of the project.
