Analyzing transportation‐related hazardous material spills in New England
This study shows that transportation‐related hazardous material spills are common in New England, and surface water supplies should be protected from this problem. A statistical analysis of reports made to the US Environmental Protection Agency in Region I (Lexington, Mass.) indicates that under‐reporting of such spills may be a serious hindrance to new legislation that would aid in protecting supplies of potable water. However, the more serious incidents were more likely to be reported to the federal government.
