Design Variables and Whole‐Life Cost Modelling
Every variable in design may have an effect on costs, not only on initial construction cost but also on costs that occur later, during the life cycle of the designed facility. It is important to ask fundamental questions to enable the designer to produce an efficient building structure in terms of life‐cycle cost (LCC). This chapter focuses on the application of whole‐life cost (WLC) theory which is central to design economics and essential in design development to minimise carbon emissions over the lifespan of buildings and built facilities. The key principles of LCC modelling methods is examined with design and cost variables, steps required in the application of the technique, associated assumptions, limitations and critique of LCC. An attempt is made to deal with carbon emissions in whole‐life analysis as a new approach by treating carbon emission as external costs and externalities in terms of the costs of emission certificates.
