Long‐Range Planning by Water Utilities
This article discusses current deficiencies in the water supply due to the rapid expansion of cities and the metropolitan areas around them. The seriousness of the water supply problem is presented through statistics complied by the U.S. Public Health Service in a report published in 1955; and, these statistics reflect the deficiency in long‐range planning by utility managers. The article argues that it is the responsibility of utility managers to initiate long‐range plans, and the following topics are discussed: project scope; area specifications; population factors; source investigations; a distribution system study; and, financial considerations.
