A Microstructural Model for Soils and Granular Materials
The microstructural approach is conceptually attractive because it dispenses with having to deal with relations between the stress and strain tensors. It presents a constitutive microstructural model for the continuous medium constructed from the inter‐granular properties and from the geometry of the granular assembly. Next, the chapter talks about numerical simulation of drained triaxial tests and undrained triaxial tests on Hostun sand. Then, it focuses on mechanical behavior of clayey materials such as remolded clays and natural clays. One of the main advantages of the micromechanical modeling approach is that it allows us to introduce various physical mechanisms in a natural way at the grain scale. One example concerns the unsaturated granular materials in which capillary forces develop between grains, depending on the degree of saturation and the morphology of the granular assembly.
