This chapter looks into the relationship between Building Information Modelling (BIM), alliances and other collaborative contracts. Commentators regularly link BIM to collaborative working and there is a natural fit between BIM and collaborative contracts that provide for early contractor involvement and Supply Chain Collaboration. The chapter considers how BIM is treated in alliance contracts. The efficient development of BIM models requires clarity as to when each level of detail will be provided in each BIM model by each team member at each stage of design, supply and construction. In the King's BIM research nearly half the interviewees reported that they relied only on existing contract provisions to govern the timing of BIM contributions. The chapter summarises two Trial Projects illustrating the effectiveness of creating a project alliance that combines collaborative working, early contractor involvement and BIM as related systems designed to deliver improved value.
