Light Pollution
Artificial light at night (ALAN) can be considered to be physical pollution, from the fact it operates against the natural characteristics of light/dark cycles. The strong evidence of the adverse effects of ALAN on animals and on human health should be balanced against the assumed (but yet to be proven) positive effects on safety and security. Lowering pollution generated by lighting installations will benefit the community and the urban, rural, and wild environment. This chapter provides a list of actions required in order to mitigate the light pollution problem, based on the Starlight Initiative, CieloBuio, and ISTIL, the Light Pollution Science and Technology Institute. Italian regional laws against light pollution are shown in a figure, along with the year of adoption. Most of the regional laws have a similar core of technical demands.
