Ways of Knowing in Design: A Position on the Culture of Interior Design Practice
Over the last several years the author had the privilege of attending many of the top interior design industry‐sponsored events where designers are recognized for their design talent and professional accomplishments. To understand how designers learn more about design, the author conducted a content analysis of four relevant qualitative sources: (1) design press; (2) requests for proposals received by national design firms; (3) national design awards ceremonies; and (4) research arms within professional design firms. This analysis follows Guba and Lincoln's qualitative research methods approach. Design press examines the structure and content of the major design publications. Requests for proposals emphasize client interest areas and professional service responses. National design award ceremonies identify incentives and evaluation criteria that meet the quality standards of the profession. Client requests and practitioners’ responses, design awards, and publications are normative means for understanding the ways of knowing in design.
