The Economic Feasibility of Heritage Preservation
The issue of the economic feasibility of heritage preservation is, perhaps more than ever, at the forefront of public debates. In search of critical components that would make the system of cultural heritage management more robust and less reliant on government funding, this chapter argues that the stakeholder support base should be broadened significantly so that, rather than depending primarily on the educated elite, it is coupled with a sustainable mechanism of financing. Related to this, the chapter addresses the need to consider the state of the overall infrastructure, both institutional and logistical, when trying to quantify the costs and benefits of heritage preservation, the complexity of relationships when looking for direct and indirect spin‐offs, and the need to include environmental, social, and cultural parameters, including heritage preservation, when aiming for sustainable economic performance in the development process.
