Hypersurfaces (1998)
This chapter presents essays on hypersurfaces written by Lars Spuybroek and Kas Oosterhuis. The twin Fresh Water and Salt Water Pavilions, built by the Dutch office NOX for the water theme park of Neeltje Jans, Holland, from 1994 to 1997, were presented, respectively, by Spuybroek and Oosterhuis in AD Profile 133, Hypersurface Architecture. Spuybroek's essay turns to Marcos Novak's pioneering theory of ‘liquid architecture’ to highlight the fusion of tectonic virtuosity and media technologies embedded in the building, where visual, acoustic and atmospheric devices react, driven by electronic sensors, to the movement of bodies inside the building but also to external environmental and meteorological data. Spuybroek's and Oosterhuis's essays comment on the digital and analogue geometries of splines, and offer an early description of parametric design as a tool aimed at the informational integration of design and construction, anticipating the design methodologies of today's (2012) Building Information Modelling.
