Practically all large metropolitan areas obtain their water supply from lakes, rivers, or reservoirs, but most smaller towns and a good number of larger cities pump their water from deep wells. The search for additional water in areas served by deep wells has led to deeper and deeper wells and pump settings. This article describes in some detail the various types of submersible pump motors on the market, including the advantages of using this type of pump over the conventional line shaft deep well pump. The article touches briefly on some of the basic precautions that should be taken in the installation and testing of these units.
